How do actors go job hunting?

If any profession is full of people who are always job hunting, it’s acting. Every actor is only one job away from being unemployed, after all. Sound familiar?

Despite the insecurity, I’ve found myself attracted to acting recently. I’ve been taking acting classes, three in all now, and have started going on auditions for films in the Chicago area. It’s far from my profession, but its a talent I want to develop for the days when I can retire from my full-time job and pursue endeavors I enjoy, such as acting.

My acting head shot...would you hire me for your next film?

My acting head shot…would you hire me for your next film?

So what’s it like to be an actor looking for a job? First you have to consult sites that lists casting calls. Then, you send in a picture of yourself, a head shot, and a resume. And you hope someone contacts you to show up for the audition. You may get a short scene to memorize and do at your audition. Or you may be asked to recite a one-minute monologue, something you’ve memorized from a play or movie. Or you may be asked to just show up and be given lines you’ve never seen and then asked to read them on camera, to act them really.

It’s a world away from the standard job interview, except in some important ways. First, it assumes you come prepared, no matter what the requirements set out before hand. Second, it expects you to be composed enough to handle whatever challenge is thrown your way. And third, it expects you to feel comfortable in a high-stress situation.

Keep all that in mind the next interview you go on. And wish me luck, I’ve had two auditions for student films this week and have a third scheduled Friday.

How good are you on phone interviews?

Phone interviews have become part of every job hiring process. Companies no longer want to take the time of bringing first-round candidates in for a first interview. Rather someone, often a human resources person, will do first interviews by phone, checking to see if a candidate meets enough basic criteria to warrant bringing them in for a face-to-face meeting.

So it’s essential you develop good phone interviewing skills. A phone interview isn’t the same as sitting in a room with someone talking directly to them. There can be distractions on both sides. and here’s a tendency to ramble on the phone, to almost become too comfortable in the situation and so speak like you might with a friend. That interviewer is not your friend, don’t talk like it.

Stayed focused during phone interviews.

Stayed focused during phone interviews.

Rather, know what you’re talking points are going to be for the call. Know what key words are in the ad you answered and be sure to get them in your answers. Give direct, short answers to questions. Avoid the urge to tell stories or give long-winded examples. Continue reading

How important is having a office to you?

It always amuses me when people start claiming some idea they have is cutting edge or a new trend. Invariably, it’s just a variation on an old idea. Such is the case these days with companies advocating open office designs, that is, putting all their workers in one big room with no individual offices.

Everyone is equal and everyone can co-operate more easily in such an open setting, the corporate think goes. Such arrangements also save a lot of money on space build-out and rents. No walls means more space to cram in people, after all.

A new concept? Hardly.

A new concept? Hardly.

I find an open office dehumanizing and counter-productive, reducing white-collar workers to factory floor-like status where all of us are just cogs in a giant corporate machine. Obviously, I’m not going to stop the trend, it will likely continue in this era of endless cost-cutting and companies thinking that lower costs somehow mean they’re growing. Continue reading

Guest Post: Five volunteer opportunities job seekers should consider

Stephanie Faris, the author of this guest post, writes for Masters in Accounting, a career resource site for individuals interested in starting a career in the accounting industry.

Volunteer work can be a great way to get your foot in the door in your chosen industry.
Whether your choice is to serve on a committee at a conference related to your business
interests or help out at charity events, you’ll be able to give back to the community while
networking with those who may become instrumental to your future career.

Here are five volunteer ideas for job seekers that can easily provide networking opportunities:

Church work
Obviously this is something you would choose if it fits your personal preferences, but if you’re regularly attending church, consider becoming more involved. Volunteering to help out with various events will push you beyond simply saying hello to your fellow churchgoers on Sunday mornings. You’ll be able to get to know other church members and make contacts that could lead to an opportunity.

Nonprofit work
This is especially important if you’d consider a career in nonprofit work. By volunteering for the organization, you’ll get the chance to make a positive impression on potential employers. You’ll also be able to try out the nonprofit before committing to a full-time job there.

Political campaigning
If you have an interest in driving the direction of our nation, helping out with a political campaign can be a great way to make a difference while networking. Often the connections you make can lead to a career in government or law, depending on your education and interests.

Internships
If you’re having a hard time finding work in your field, an internship may be the answer, especially if to add experience to your résumé. Unpaid internships are often necessary in fields you’re looking like broadcasting and journalism, where a young recent graduate is required to have experience that would otherwise be hard to obtain.

Volunteer locally
Whether you serve on the board of your neighborhood association or become actively involved in the PTA, volunteering in any capacity can lead to important connections. Similar to working in the church, volunteering brings you out of the audience and puts you in the limelight, meeting people.

The key to finding your dream job is to leave the house and meet people, as often as possible. Volunteering allows you to become a part of the community while helping others and meeting people who could help you with your job search.
