Why It’s Never Too Late To Change Careers

Sometimes we can get stuck in a rut, no matter if it’s love, life or work. When those times come around, it’s critical that you dig yourself out. In terms of a career, you should feel able to change horizons whenever you wish. Sometimes, this might not be a possibility, but you still must do everything you can to realize it.

Plenty of successful people have changed careers and made a real success of it. Of course, they might already have the privilege and capital to succeed in their field. Ronald Reagan became the President of the United States of America after an acting career while Terry Crews turned his disappointing American Football career into a successful acting gig. Jeff Bezos worked across Wall Street in the field of Computer Science before launching Amazon. What’s true is that if there is another passion emerging for you, is that you should pursue it with all your might.

Of course, it might be too late to change careers, it’s very hard work and could be a big risk. There’s a lot to learn, and you have to listen to people who might be very younger than you. However, the phrase of it being too late to change careers only applies if you feel you aren’t up to the challenge. If you need to take a degree to succeed, look into the best adult scholarships – there’s no bother if it takes you three years to graduate as you’ll be three years older in three years regardless. Your skills on your resume might make you more of an attractive hire anyway!

On a final note, the Guardian has a great case study of a normal career change. If you need to inspired, look into the case of Adrian Wanless:

“Adrian Wanless, 35, runs a successful web design and development company in Birstwith, North Yorkshire. He set up http://www.mawbray.com last year after nearly ten years as an IT contractor, and now runs the business from his home. ‘The best part of the job is the flexibility – being able to work when you want to, and avoiding the two hours commuting every day,’ he says. ‘I know that if I do overtime, it benefits my business directly. Running your own company also focuses your mind – if you mess around and don’t do any work, you don’t get paid. It’s as simple as that.’ He has found his niche building websites for small businesses, from hotels, guest-houses and holiday cottages to e-commerce sites for jewelers, Venetian blind companies and firms selling crash helmets. ‘It’s the business which is too small for big web development organizations to be interested in,’ he says. Since his wife Sarah, 29, commutes to Leeds every day, he tends to keep regular office hours to help the discipline of home-working.”

There’s a lot of hard work, but it is never too late unless you truly believe that you can’t do it. There’s no reason not to push yourself and if you feel like you could succeed in a new career path – make the switch.
