Which Three Questions Will an Interviewer Ask You?

One of the guiding principles of my book, Always Be Job Hunting, is what the name implies, always be hunting, always be looking for not only jobs but tips and advice that can help you find jobs. Sometimes the tips will come from what seem the most unlikely of places.

That happened recently with me when I saw an article in the Jerusalem Post of all places, that, although directed at employers and interviewers, also had great advice for job seekers.

Be prepared for these questions when you begin a job interview.

The piece outlines three questions potential employers may ask you about jobs on your resume. Being prepared for these will help you avoid awkward silences in the interview and, if you prepare intelligent answers, just might help you get to the next level of the interview process.

How Hard is It to Get Back in the Work Force?

How difficult is it to return to the workforce after a few years off? Very difficult but not impossible, as I detail about my own experience in Always Be Job Hunting.

The Harvard Business Review’s November issue also looks at the topic, and cautions against thinking a return is even harder in our current depressed jobs market.

“Given the weak global labor market, this may seem a strange time for employers to be expanding their pipeline of prospective employees. But that view misses an important point. Even though unemployment is high, companies struggle to find the right applicants. The potential candidates for returnship programs are a high-caliber bunch.

How Do You Go Back to Work After a Major Health Problem?

How do you face going back to work after a major health problem? That’s a question I’ve been wrestling with since mid-August when I discovered I had a major artery blockage leading to my heart and needed surgery to address the problem.

My surgery is called angioplasty and involves inserting a mesh tube called a stent into my artery to ensure blood flows normally again. I had it done August 13, and was back a work a week later.

Ten days after surgery, I was watching a baseball game with coworkers. Really? Yes, really.

A week was enough time to recover physically, my surgeon assured me. What about emotionally? That isn’t his department, it’s something I, or you, have to address after such a traumatic event. Continue reading

Why Isn’t My Resume Getting Read?

You’ve hopefully put a lot of time into creating your resume and so it becomes difficult to understand why you send out scores of them and never hear from potential employers.

It could be because those employers are never seeing your resume. Rather, they have software screening the mountain of resumes they receive to search for key words that match the skill set they want.

I write about this problem in Always Be Job Hunting and discuss it in my talks on job hunting, but even I was amazed by a recent article I saw in which one source is quoted as saying 70 percent of resumes are never seen by human eyes.

Every resume starts a blank slate. What words you put on it can be the difference in getting an interview.
