The American Marketing Association has an opportunity for a managing editor to join the publishing team, helping to guide the production of the flagship magazine, Marketing News, as well as two quarterly magazines and a portfolio of e-newsletters.
We’re looking for a skilled managing editor with a background in magazine production, a demonstrated mastery of AP style, grammar and punctuation; proven editing skills; and a feel for the English language. We need someone with an eye for detail, a firm grasp on business reporting skills, and proven familiarity with digital tools including content management systems, Adobe Creative Suite, podcasts and blogs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Keep track of story progress and maintain deadlines for each issue, supervising the proofing process.
Serve as second reader (in collaboration with editors) of copy prior to publication. Work with writers on initial story revisions. Ensure that writers are following both AMA style and AP style.
Serve as primary researcher/coordinator for global coverage, seeking out possible story ideas and contributors.
Maintain relationships with columnists. Ensure that columns are delivered in a timely manner, revisions are completed and columnists’ payments are sent.
Maintain relationships with freelancers, researching and developing assignments, sending and filing contracts, coordinating schedules and deadlines, and handling freelancers’ payments.
Maintain contact with other AMA departments and keep abreast of developments throughout the organization that merit coverage. Write news briefs announcing AMA awards and other information.
Assist the editors with new staff development, training and story assignments as needed.
Actively contribute to story development discussions, and to discussions about editorial direction, special projects and other ongoing editorial endeavors.
Write department pieces and features for the magazines and e-newsletters as needed.
Assist with the production and distribution of the e-newsletters, ensuring that story assignments are completed and copy is presented in an SEO-friendly manner.
Actively monitor marketing developments and suggest new features/columns/etc. that can enhance AMA content’s editorial usefulness to members.
Coordinate and execute special projects as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or related field
Demonstrated mastery of AP style, grammar and punctuation; proven editing skills and feel for the English language
Advanced knowledge of/experience in business reporting
Familiarity with digital tools including content management systems, Adobe Creative Suite, podcasts, blogs, etc.
Creativity, tenacity and the ability to work in a team environment:
Education in/knowledge of marketing preferred
