Start Your Professional Career Without a Degree

There is often a lot of pressure to get a degree before you begin your professional career. Many professions seem like they require at least a bachelor’s degree when that might not always be true. You definitely need college education for some career paths, like medicine or law, but there are others that you can enter without higher education. You don’t have to enter into a trade as an alternative, either. Before you decide that you’re not going to get anywhere in the professional world without a degree, consider other ways that you could begin a professional career.

Look for On-the-job Training

In some cases, you might be able to find ways to work and train at the same time. On-the-job training could come in a couple of different forms. For example, a paid internship will allow you to learn and also earn at the same time. Some opportunities might be short-term, but others come from employers who want to train employees who can become assets to their company in the long-term. In fact, many employers don’t want to invest in training for employees who aren’t going to stick around. You could find various opportunities for on-the-job training, from accounting to admin.

Find Other Ways to Learn and Train

If you want to continue your education or training, you don’t need to get a full bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualifications. There are other qualifications to gain and different ways to learn. You might be interested in going to community college and perhaps completing an associate’s degree. You can also find great online resources that help you gain professional qualifications, like the LSBF free Foundation Certificate in accounting. There are evening classes you could take, short courses and online materials. Whether you can invest some money or you need to learn for free, you have choices.

Go It Alone and Build a Business

If you want to work in a professional and skilled industry but you don’t have a degree, you could just go it alone. Starting a business is tough, and you’ll likely make mistakes along the way, but plenty of people have got to where they wanted to be by doing it themselves. You might already have a skill you can put to use, but you can also easily learn what you need to know. Many people have started by teaching themselves a new skill, and there are many courses and resources to help you.

Start Working and Aim for Promotions

If you want to start working right away, another way to climb the career ladder is simply to start working. Find any job you can in the area you want to work in and start working your way up. You need to make sure you can take the initiative and keep pushing yourself, though. If not, you could end up stuck in a dead-end job with no hope of advancing. Put yourself forward for training and promotions whenever possible.

If your dream is a comfortable office job or just to be in charge of other people, you don’t always need a degree. You can reach your goals using other methods.
