Some people have no clue who they want to work for or what they want to do. Quite often just focusing on their skillset and taking it from there. However, some lucky people out there know exactly what they want to do and even know who they want to work for.
They may have come to this decision from a recent experience, whether that be a good or bad one where they want to help the cause. Or perhaps just having a passion for a company. Often this might be something global and brand recognizable. However you come about your decision, your next step is to get a foot in the door with your chosen employer.
Research the interview process
Many larger corporations potentially have hundreds of resumes flying through their door each week, which often means they have a generic interview process in order to whittle those potential candidates down to a few good options. This is when research on your part is key to ensure that you know exactly what to expect when you get that opportunity to enter the process. Thankfully, the internet is rife with many articles and resources to help you prepare. A good resource to utilize will include the stages of the interview and what to expect.
Searching online in forums and gaining people’s experiences and opinions could also prove valuable. Often these processes will include online tests and telephone interviews,. Preparing in advance should help you easily advance through the different stages, enabling you to get to the all-important face to face interview where you can really shine.
Be bold and go straight to the headquarters
If you are struggling to find any vacancies online where you can even just submit your interest, then more courageous action might be needed. Why not head straight to the headquarters, if this is an option, and hand in your resume directly?
A big piece of advice would be to also include a covering letter to ensure that you have outlined your desire and skills. Not forgetting your passion for the company and why you want to work for them. If the headquarters are not an option, you could consider entering a local office.
Write a letter or email outlining your aspirations and ambitions
If you can’t get into an office or headquarters, then your best bet is to write a letter or email directly. Attaching your resume and highlighting your key attributes is key. Try to ensure that your email and letter doesn’t sound generic.
You can imagine that these people will receive a lot of correspondence on a daily basis. You need to ensure that your letter and email get’s read thoroughly, instead of being discarded after the first paragraph. You are your unique selling point, so ensure that your outline exactly why you are perfect for their business.
Don’t take no for an answer
Finally, if you are not successful the first time round, don’t be disheartened. You may not have been necessarily right for the role you applied for, or quite simply could have been missed with your email or letter. Keep trying, and you will succeed.
